Activision gets Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles licence

April’s looking a bit young there isn’t she? [see above image]

A new multi-year deal with Nickelodeon will see Activision publishing three new TMNT games, with the first due out this summer.

Unfortunately there’s absolutely zero information beyond that at the moment, with no hint as to what any of the games will be, what platforms they’ll appear on, or who’s making them.

The games will be based on the animated series, which we haven’t seen ourselves but we hear is quite good. Although there have been no new games of note since, the original ‘80s cartoon had a number of highly successful video games released for it.

A number of NES titles were particularly popular in America, but it’s probably the Konami scrolling beat ‘em-up that most gamers recall most fondly. The old coin-op game was re-released a few years ago on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.

Whether Activision will try to draw on the nostalgia for that game is anyone’s guess but it’s worth nothing that Lego currently have a toy licence for the Turtles. So if history is anything to go by that means a Lego Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game may well be one of the three tie-ins Activision is already planning.

‘The fans of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are unique in that they span generations and are very passionate,’ said an Activision exec. ‘We respect this passion and look forward to working with Nickelodeon to create games that embody the spirit of the property.’

‘We are confident that these upcoming games will take gamers through interactive environments and action-packed adventures that truly capture the essence, tone and exciting elements of the Turtles,’ added a Nickelodeon suit.
